For much of 2026, we have been devoting the Navigator to explaining each of the six indicators of personal readiness: identitymindsetbalance, capital, legacy and, for this month, awareness. Each indicator requires work to understand and assess, then a business owner can incorporate this knowledge into how they plan for their future as well as how they operate day to day.

Awareness is the sixth and final indicator because it ties in all other indicators. A business owner must go through the steps to process each previous indicator before they can have a full awareness of how exiting a business will affect themselves and those close to them.

Let’s take a closer look at how awareness, as an indicator of personal readiness, can affect your exit and how you run your business today.

How does awareness function as an indicator of personal readiness?

Awareness is the ability to see what you are actually stepping into before you take that step. Becoming aware is a state of being, and there are no shortcuts to attain it. In terms of exit planning and value growth, awareness refers to the familiarity you have with exit options and what planning steps you are considering or have already taken.

Lack of awareness, at any point in business ownership, leads to damage. Rushed decisions made without a full understanding of timing, consequences, and downstream impact can seriously impact the value of your business or lock you into fewer options down the road.

Awareness reflects how well you understand your present state and future options, potential risks and opportunities, timing, and what a transition may entail. A business owner might be well prepared in the other areas of personal readiness, but without a full awareness of each indicator, and how they work together, their decision-making is still hindered.

  • An owner who has full awareness of their capital and what they wish their legacy to be will make decisions on exit strategy that align with their goals and are realistically attainable.
  • An owner with awareness of their own mindset and identity will be able to avoid acting through emotion and can step back to gain clarity on important decisions. They won’t cling too tightly or rush to escape some situation due to a need for control.
  • An owner with awareness of their work/life balance will avoid the stress of overworking themselves and burning out.

In order to broaden your awareness, have you spoken with advisors? Do you have a clear plan of exit and a rough timeline? Have you thought about how your exit will affect you and those close to you? These steps help you gain the understanding you need to map out strategies that align with your goals.

In short, you may have all the pieces in place for accelerated value growth and an exit plan that aligns with your goals — yet, if you don’t know this, the puzzle remains unsolved.

Owners with awareness ask better questions, avoid costly mistakes, feel less overwhelmed, and easily shift from a reactive mode to a planning mode. Being aware means choosing your next step from a place of clarity rather than crisis. You will see the opportunity in front of you as well as the process that follows, the emotional toll, the time commitment, and the risks involved.

This outlook doesn’t just pay off when it comes to exit planning. Awareness is vital to all stages of building and running a successful business.

Awareness is not about having all the answers. It’s the intentionality that comes with being familiar with realistic exit options and the planning steps you’ve taken or are considering taking.
